WideRadar RS Rating (0–99) is our proprietary rank vs other stocks; the pane also plots an RS line vs SPY for trend and phase.

Overview

Stock RS Line rebases the stock and SPY to the same starting point on the chart, then plots the ratio through time. When the line rises, the stock is outperforming the benchmark on that window; when it falls, the benchmark is leading. This is the line growth traders use for visual RS work — distinct from the 0–99 RS rating used in screeners and tables.

WideRadar shades the area between the RS line and its 21-day EMA green when RS is rising (line above EMA) and red when RS is fading (line below EMA). The EMA smooths short noise so phase changes are easier to spot than on the raw line alone.

The tip number is the WideRadar RS Rating (0–99) — a proprietary score of price strength ranked across our common-stock database. Longer lookbacks weight the most recent quarter heavier. Choose 3, 6, 9, or 12 months in indicator settings (12 months is the default). Use the line for trend vs SPY; use the rating for how strong the name is versus peers.

How it is calculated

At the anchor bar (first regular session bar on screen, or the saved anchor), both the stock and SPY closes are indexed to 100. Each subsequent bar plots stock_index / spy_index × 100, producing a wavy line with real shape rather than a flat percentile shelf.

A 21-period EMA is applied to the RS line values. Phase shading fills between the line and EMA: green when the line is above the EMA (RS rising), red when below (RS fading).

The WideRadar RS Rating (0–99) is a separate proprietary score: quarterly price returns are weighted (recent heavier on longer windows), then percentile-ranked across our common-stock database — it is not the Y value of the plotted line.

RS line = (stock_close / stock_anchor) / (SPY_close / SPY_anchor) × 100
RS Phase = RS line vs 21-day EMA of RS line

Inputs

Rating Period
WideRadar RS Rating lookback: 3, 6, 9, or 12 months (default 12). Longer windows weight the latest quarter more. The tip number ranks vs other stocks; the RS line stays vs SPY.
EMA Period
Length of the exponential moving average drawn on the RS line for phase shading, default 21.

How to read it

A rising RS line means the stock is gaining relative to SPY from the anchor point. Flat or falling RS while price makes new highs is a warning that leadership versus the benchmark is slipping even if absolute price looks strong.

Green phase (line above EMA) marks periods where short-term RS momentum is improving; red phase marks fading RS. Use phase shifts alongside price structure rather than as standalone signals.

Compare the line shape to the rating: a high rating with a fading line can mean leadership is still strong on your lookback window but weakening recently.

Signals to look for

RS line breakout

RS line pushing to new highs on the chart window while price consolidates often precedes the stock resuming leadership versus SPY.

Phase flip to rising

RS line crossing above its 21-day EMA after a red phase marks a shift from fading to rising relative strength.

Divergence vs price

Price higher highs with RS line lower highs shows the stock is lagging SPY even as absolute price advances.
